Building on the success of our inaugural program, the July 2026 Making Waves workshop series united a community of students and professionals to deepen their understanding of ocean mapping, explore careers in hydrography and ocean science, and support the global mission to map Earth's ocean floor.
During the 2026 Making Waves program, participants processed multibeam bathymetric data from more than 20 research expeditions and transits, making meaningful contributions to the global effort to map the ocean floor. Using professional software including QPS Qimera alongside openly available tools such as GeoMapApp and GMRT, participants gained hands-on experience while helping prepare real-world datasets for long-term preservation and scientific use. Final curation and integration of these datasets is still underway, so additional metrics—including the total area processed and published data products—will be added once processing is complete. Scroll down to explore interactive StoryMaps created by participants describing what they learned and the scientific contributions they made during the program.
