Beneath every map and measurement lies a human story.
Making Waves Presents: Girl Talk listens for, and amplifies, those stories — moments of learning, challenge, and inspiration that connect people, planet, and purpose.
Through conversations with scientists, engineers, students, and storytellers, we explore how our individual journeys come together to shape a more inclusive, inspired, and curious ocean community. We celebrate trailblazers who are breaking barriers in oceanography and marine science — and aim to empower the next generation of ocean explorers, technologists, and scientists to make their own waves.
A pioneer in ocean mapping, Marie Tharp's skillful combination of cartography, mathematics, geology, and artistry, enabled her to reveal details of the seafloor using very limited data. When her findings challenged the scientific establishment they were initially dismissed as "Girl Talk." Her work has since been referred to as the spark that ignited the plate tectonics revolution.
By reclaiming and redefining the term Girl Talk, diverse women in the field of Ocean Mapping are inspiring and empowering a new generation of individuals to explore and pursue careers in Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM).
Marie Tharp worked at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University.
